Who We Are
An independent, survivor-led initiative dedicated to accountability, healing, and the long fight for justice.
"No survivor should have to navigate the aftermath of human rights abuse alone. Yelef exists to walk alongside them — with the tools, community, and advocacy they need to reclaim their lives and demand accountability."
Built From the Gap
The Yelef Initiative was founded after its co-founders witnessed firsthand how survivors of human rights abuse fall through the cracks — too traumatised for legal systems not designed for them, too isolated for existing support structures to reach.
The name Yelef means "to give birth to" or "to bring into the world" in several languages across the African continent — a reflection of our belief that justice, healing, and accountability must be born from survivor experience, not imposed from the outside.
Since launching, we have supported survivors across 12 countries, partnered with 40 legal organisations, and built a model that puts survivor agency at every step.
Our Core Values
These aren't statements on a wall. They're the criteria we use when designing programs, vetting partners, and making decisions.
Survivor Agency
Survivors define their own needs and lead the design of every program they participate in. We ask, we listen, and we build what they say they need — not what we assume.
Confidentiality & Safety
Every intake is confidential by default. We never share identifying information without explicit, informed consent. Survivor safety is non-negotiable — it shapes every operational decision.
Accountability
We document, report, and advocate for accountability — for perpetrators, institutions, and ourselves. We hold our partners to the same standard.
Trauma-Informed Practice
Every interaction — from the first intake call to a legal consultation — is designed to avoid re-traumatisation. Our staff and partners are trained accordingly, and we update our practices as the evidence evolves.
